How to create home happiness

If you’re wondering what is exactly is “home happiness” it’s about how content you feel in your home. Why is home happiness important? Because research from The Happiness Research Institute reported: “if you are happy with your home then you’re far more likely to be happy in life”.

Space and environment can impact the way you feel about yourself and your outlook on look. In this blog post, I’m going to talk about how to create home happiness for your home and why it’s so important.

Let’s take a closer look at the research carried out by The Happiness Research Institute. They collected data from 13,489 respondents across 10 countries and 2,011 were from the UK who ranked no. 4  across the other 10 countries. Not bad!

The results showed that mental health was the number one contributing factor to happiness followed by home happiness which came in second.

More so than career, income and physical health. It turns out that it’s all about the emotional connection you feel with your home. An area I work I go deep with my clients by really getting to know them.

People valued how they feel about their home more than the colour choices, decorating styles and garden designs or kitchen worktops*.

Take a moment to ask yourself how does your home make you feel? Proud, comfortable, beautiful…

“happiness with the home is closely linked to many other emotions and aspects of our lives, such as feeling at ease at home, feeling safe, feeling connected with ourselves, and feeling in control.*”

Knowing this information how do we create home happiness? Let’s start by asking a few questions first…

How do you feel at home?

When you enter your home after a long day at work or from a busy day how do you feel? Do you feel instantly, “ahh I’m home I can put my feet up with a nice cuppa!” Or do you feel annoyed and lack a sense of calm because your home feels dull or you’re living with crumbling walls etc.

So what can you do to make your home work better for you? I think the question here really is what’s holding you back from really your dream home? It can sometimes be simple things like clearing clutter, lack of time, money or creativity. I’m going to break down each one of these below and provide suggestions.

Are you making time for your home?

“I just don’t have the time!” said everyone at some point in their life! But here’s the thing if you really want to create home happiness then you have to make time for your home.

I know we are all busy and get caught up running around the kids or working late. I recommend spending 15 minutes a day or whatever you can spare and start creating a list of things that need to be done in your home, collect images of things you like and get inspired.

Start working through your list and before you know it you’ll be hooked. If you have more than one room, I recommend tackling each room separately. This will help prevent having half-baked rooms.

You could also consider hiring a professional who can help you. Often it’s just a small push you need to get started and you can absolutely get started today!

Work out a budget

Creating a budget to your project no matter how big or small will really help put your project into context. Even if it’s really small simple things like buying new pictures or re-decorating the bathroom.

You might think it will cost a fortune but after some research, it could be more affordable than you realise. How to create home happiness starts with taking small steps and actions towards your goals.

Creativity

This is something I hear a lot and people find it hard to figure out their style. My number one tip for getting your creative juices flowing is to start mood boarding your ideas.

Whether that’s cut-outs from magazines, images you already have or a simple Pinterest board. This leads me to the next area which is also key when considering how to create home happiness.

Express yourself…

How do you express yourself in your home? The GoodHome Report states, “A Home is not only a place, but it’s also a feeling of belonging, of being in tune with ourselves.

It is a place where we can express who we are through the way we live and the way we’ve renovated, furnished and decorated our homes.”

Having visited many houses, the above point is absolutely vital when it comes down to making your house feel like home.

It’s all about you! How do you express your personality in your home? Perhaps it’s through colours, quirky ornaments, furniture, textures and plants that you love.

A lot of my clients have a running theme through their home or have a different personality for each room of the home. Whatever their style their personality is always there.

How do you feel about your home?

The report states there are five core emotions which cover our basic human needs and explain whether or not we feel happy about our homes; pride, comfort, identity, safety, control.

Which one resonates with you the most? I’d love to hear all about it let me know in the comments below
